Show Notes:

Emmy Season is here and the awards show is September 19th. Mario from Movies with Mr. Mario is here to discuss our Emmy nominated favorites and who we think will win.

Transcript:

Julia: Hey friends. Welcome to pop culture mixed me jealous. And I'm your host, Julia. And on today's show, Mario from movies with Mario is here and we were talking the Emmys,

the 73rd primetime Emmy awards for honor, the best. Primetime television programming from June 1st, 2020 until May 31st, 2021 as chosen by the academy of television arts and sciences. There are some really incredible shows, nominated, and I had a few what the fuck moments. So let's get into it, Mario.

Welcome to the

Mario: show. Hi, Julia. How are you doing? I'm good. How are you? I'm doing great. It's every season. I can't, I can't wait. I know. I'm so excited. I feel like now. Because of cause 20, 21 or 2020, it kind of threw everything off. I felt like this year, we actually have a actual award season this year, so I'm excited to see that return.

Um, so yeah, and there's so many good nominees this year and I'm like, I was going through all the nominees and I'm just like, oh my gosh, I wish I could just give awards to everyone. I'll do so good. But you know, there's always just one winner, the occasional, maybe once in a while, Ty, but that rarely happens.

It rarely happens. So, but yeah, there's so much good stuff. So much good TV right now.

Julia: There really is. Let's dive in, but what you want to start with comedy or drama?

Mario: Yeah, let's do comedy first. Okay. Always

Julia: one for listeners at home. We have several categories in comedy that we're going to touch on. So outstanding comedy series, outstanding comedy actor, outstanding Dean comedy actress, outstanding comedy, supporting actress and supporting actor.

So let's start with our series. Nominated are Blackish, Emily and Paris hacks, pen, 15 Ted lasso, the flight attendant and the Kominsky method. Mario, have you watched all of these?

Mario: I've seen, uh, I, the only one I haven't seen is the Kominsky method and hadn't 15, 15 is so funny. I haven't seen it. That was the one thing it's on my list.

Everyone's telling me I need to watch it, but. Again, there's so many nominees. It's like, you got to find the time in the day to

Julia: watch all this. I was actually surprised it was nominated because it feels very niche to me. I might my, to my best friend, one of my best friends from high school texted me and was like, you had like, well, there's a group chat of the three of us that went to high school together.

We were really close in high school. She was like, you guys have to watch this show. So then I turned it on. I was like, oh my God, how did they. We weren't the only ones that were like this in high school. They actually think it's middle school. And if they're in middle school either way though, like just the weird, awkward, so funny.

So it was nice to see it nominated because it felt so niche. Whereas like Ted lasso is basic, like who, who doesn't love Ted lasso. I have yet to meet anybody. Right.

Mario: If you don't like to last, so there's something wrong with you,

Julia: right? Can we even be friends if you don't like to though? Do you have a soul?

If you don't like to laugh though,

Mario: and yeah, I know there's like, all these shows are so good. The ones that I've seen at least, um, I love the flight attendant to win

Julia: so good.

Mario: I can't wait for season. We've already load that

Julia: one. So that makes sense. The way that it ended, I buy it and it was totally original the way that they were telling the story.

Sorry, we could go on and on and on you go with your thoughts. You

Mario: feel, um, Black-ish has a good chance, but I know they're in, they're going to be in their final season. So I feel like if it wins, it's going to win next year. It'll be in their final season. So they'll kind of just. A word for the overall story.

Um, I really think Ted loss is going to take it this time. Um, it's been on the award circuit for awhile when the golden globe and one of the critic's choice. Exactly. I'm like who doesn't love to lasso. So I really feel like it's, it's the little show that could cause it's on apple TV, apple TV. Yeah. So I really feel like Ted lasso though is going to take it.

Um, and I, and I would be extremely happy with that because it definitely deserves. Yeah,

Julia: I agree. I agree with you about the Blackish production. I had the same thought. I thought, you know, if blockers doesn't win this year, they'll probably wouldn't next year. Cause it's pretty common for the Emmy's to award outstanding series in your final year, which for them it'll be next year's award ceremony.

I was shocked to see Emily and Paris nominated that did not get a universal, overwhelming. No audience love. I loved it because as I've mentioned, many times on the show, any world where I can live for three beautiful men are vying for my love. I'm here for it. But in terms of like, when you look at the quality of the shows that are nominated in this category, it's just not there.

Mario: The award shows tend to be political too. So I mean it's, and it's a lot of campaigning too. People don't realize that that all always shows the campaign. We don't live in the area where we probably see all the campaign, but if we LA or something, it's everywhere, go boards. There's news ads. You see them posters, plastered all over buildings, probably

Julia: going out to lunch with people

Mario: from show Netflix is really good at prom pumping up their shows.

Um, I feel like, so I think it's just people like Netflix. So. You know, nominated, they wanted a nominated something.

Julia: Yeah. And the Kominsky method and Emily and Paris are Netflix originals. For those of you listening, the flight attendant and, um, and hacks is HBO HBO, max pen 15 is a Hulu original or is it FX either way?

You can find it on Hulu. Yes. And then Blackish, as we all know is on ABC, which is network television. Okay. So your going with Ted lasso, I'm in.

Mario: Are you keeping score? So we see who's right at the

Julia: end. Um, yeah, I'm gonna, because we're going to call back when we read up the Emmy show. So you're going with Ted lasso.

Ah, I'm inclined to agree, but then also I feel like the flight attendant and, um, hacks has a, is a strong contender, but I don't think hacks is as strong of a contender. I really enjoyed the show. I do have some criticisms about the show, but I don't really have any criticisms for the flight attendant. And I just, I love Ted last, so I have no criticisms for Ted last.

So I'm going to jump on that bandwagon. And then I'm going to say maybe, maybe the flight attendant could take it to. Okay, outstanding comedy actor. So in this category, Anthony Anderson for Blackish Kenan Thompson for Keenan William H Macy for shameless, Jason Sudeikis for Ted lasso and Michael Douglas for the Kominsky method method for people listening, who maybe aren't into the Emmy's William H Macy has one before in the past for shameless, kind of over him, winning for shameless.

Shameless has been on, I think they just wrapped their 10th season. Or just ended their 10th season and 10 years a fucking Frank is enough.

Mario: Okay. Is. He's a mess.

Julia: He's a mess. And that's why,

Mario: because he plays a mess very well does, but I

Julia: need it to be done. Stop, stop. Awarding. That kind of like behavior.

Mario: Yes.

I'm. I'm, I'm, I'm excited to see Kenan Thompson on there cause he's always great. Um, especially in SNL, I love him

Julia: in a sense. Oh, he's so good. And he's the longest running CAS number on SNL. Yes.

Mario: So, and then I'm glad Anthony Anderson's on there cause he's great in black. I haven't seen the Kominsky method, so, but I'm sure Michael Douglas does Greg.

He's always grading. He's

Julia: been nominated before I believe for this role.

Mario: Yeah. And then Jason, Sudeikis Ted lasso. I, for me, I think it's a, it's a win. I think Jason said that, cause he's going to walk away with it. No problem. Like I said, he's he won the golden glove. He won the critic's choice. Um, this is pretty much the last, um, the award show for Ted lasso this season.

So I see him walking away.

Julia: Yeah, I actually agree. I would, I wouldn't be surprised at William H Macy wins because again, he's won so often for Frank, that's like a really complicated character to play awesome over him winning. Um, but I also agree, I think Ted lasso is going to take it and Jason, just to take us as so good as Ted lasso, he's really great at being that cheerful guy who has like deep dark emotions that he's just probably.

T the world's cheerleader to combat his deep dark emotions. Um, and so, you know, that's, that's, that's a lot. He does. He does well. Okay. Outstanding comedy actress, Tracee Ellis Ross for Blackish. She plays, um, Anthony Anderson's wife. Jean smart for hacks, Allison Janney for mom, Aidy Bryant for shrill and Kaley.

Cuoco for the flight attendant. Have you watched?

Mario: I haven't seen shrill. That was the only, that's the only one I haven't seen. Um, but any brand again is great in SNL. Um, so I'm, I'm pretty sure she's amazing in Shirl. Um, I love Kaylee co go to win, just cause she was amazing in the fight antenna just to play, you know, an alcoholic and just going crazy.

Trying to solve mysteries could be theory. Yeah. It's total opposite. She, she did a 360, which is great. I love what actresses and actors can do that. Cause it's like it shows they have range. Yes. Tracee Ellis Ross is always great, but I think I, like I said, I think Blackish will win all these awards next year because of the final season.

I think it's going to go to Allison Janney just cause mom's done. Oh yeah. I believe this was the last season. So I feel like they're gonna, they'll go with Allison Janney and I think everyone else is going to be coming back for another season. So I think there'll be another chance for them to win. So I'm going to go with Allison Janney waiting lists.

Julia: So this one's harder for me because I think 80 Bryant was really great and shrill, shrill was only they stopping at the third season, so they're not coming back, but I don't, I don't think that she's gonna, I don't think she's going to win because in comparison to the other performances, like Kaylee Polk was performance and the flight attendant.

Holy shit. I was so I was so impressed because I watched the big bang theory. The time, it originally debuted until it ended. And so watching. Somebody for that long, be a character. You kind of think, well, they can't do anything else. Like what else are they going to do? Right. It's like pour a funds over a beer is never anybody but Carlton.

And so it was really refreshing to see how talented she actually can like is. And then Jean smart was pretty good. Twitter. The Twitter. Oh, my God, the Twitter verse was just all about doing smart. Like they were just like, this woman is amazing. She does too. Yeah. Cause if you look at her from between hacks and the mayor of east town, you're just like, holy shit says like, yeah,

Mario: I actually can do supporting, and then she can lead a show, which

Julia: yeah, I'm going to go with Jean smart.

I'm probably right. I'm probably wrong, but I just, I really loved her performance. I actually, okay. Actually, here's the truth. I really want Kaley Cuoco to win, but I don't, I don't think she will. Yeah, actually, that's a lie. I really want Tracee Ellis Ross to win, but I agree with you as in next year, she'll probably get nominated again because it's their last season and then she'll probably win because that's what the Emmys, that's what the award shows too, for the television stuff.

They just like to give it to you all in the final season. Are supporting actresses in comedy are Hannah I'm bender, I think is how you say it. She's with ha she D she's hacks. Uh, Kate McKinnon, SNL Cecily, strong SNL Aidy Bryant for SNL and Juno temple for Ted lasso. Oh, and Hannah Waddington Ted lasso and Rosie Perez, the flight attendant.

Mario: Uh, this is a strong category cause they're all so good. I believe I want to say SNL. History with the most nominations this year. I want to say, I read that somewhere, which, I mean, it makes sense. There was a very strong season. Um, Kay. McKinnon's always good. She's talented. She's one though.

Julia: Whenever they like talk about how like, oh, they haven't written her contract yet.

I'm like, what the fuck are you doing as the night? Can you eat Kate McKinnon?

Mario: Exactly. Yeah. So definitely strong is amazing. I love her. She was just in the show. Schmincke dune on apple TV that. Any Brian's grades, Rosie predators was good in the fight attendant. Um, I

Julia: was so impressed. I was so impressed with Rosie pres and then she does.

Yes. And there's just so much there where you're just like, I really hope they develop more for her in season two because damn, I got a lot of questions. Right.

Mario: Hannah and bang binder and hacks choose great. Hannah wedding, Hammond, Ted lots on Juno temple in Thailand. So both really great. For me, I think it's going to be, Hanno waiting him from Ted lasso.

Um, just because she's been winning all the words and she's great in that I would love for Juno temple to win because I love Juno temple and she's just great in her little character on Ted lasso. Okay. But I really think it's going to be, Hanning Hannah him. I'm saying all these names wrong, but

Julia: she's so she just posted the other day a video of her singing.

And I was just like, cause you know, nowadays you kind of wonder like, is that person actually singing or is it like cleaned up or did they have somebody come in? Who could sound like that? Something. Yes. And so I love that she really is like a triple threat and I was watching this video. Damn girl like Kim, she's such a good vocalist.

I mm. This, once again, I like you. This is a hard category because Juno temple and Ted lasso is so incredible. She's so good as Keely. And then Kate McKinnon is my absolute favorite on SNL. I think Rosie Perez winning would be a huge, would be

Mario: huge for the show. Yeah, definitely. Yeah. I don't know. I feel like, yeah, the flight attendant was so good, but like I said, because it's coming back for another season, I think, yeah.

These people will get their due later on. I feel like if it's going to win this season, it's going to be for like writing a writing episode or directing an

Julia: episode. I'm going to go with Kate McKinnon. All

Mario: right. She's great. I love Ricky McKinnon she's so everything

Julia: she's. So she's so funny supporting actors also a pretty stacked category.

We have Carl Clemmens Hopkins from hacks, uh, Jeremy swift from Ted lasso, Bowen yang. I think his SNL, um, Paul riser for is he the Kominsky method? Is that when he was on Kenan Thompson for Keenan? No for SNL. Yeah. That was like SNL. Cause he, yeah. And then Brett Goldstein, who? Roy cat he's here. He's there.

He's every fucking word I get. I love him

Mario: so much.

Julia: He wrote episode six for Ted lasso for season two. It was so good. It was so good. Uh, so obviously he's Ted lasso. Brandon Hunt is also Ted lasso. He's beard, coach beard, and Nick Mohammed who plays Nate on Ted lasso. So we got a lot of Ted lasso contenders,

Mario: and they're also good.

That's the, all these categories. I'm just like, I want you all the way and because you guys are so great. Yes. Um, Bowen yang was really good in SNL. He did the iceberg skit.

Um, I, uh, I want, I want bread goals seem to win, and I think he will win because he is where I can't. And I think he's such a, he's such a good character that everyone loves Roy cancer. I really think he's going to take, and I would be ecstatic if he does.

Julia: I'm inclined to agree, because again, on the internet, people love Roy Kent.

And he's literally everywhere. He has a podcast. So I bookmarked it to listen to it. Cause I was like, okay, I got it. I'll send you the, I'll send you the link to his installer because it's, it looks really interesting,

Mario: different than his character, which is hilarious. Yeah.

Julia: It's called movies to die with. I think.

Or something like that. I, I it's, I have it bookmarked. And then, um, my friend was telling me that as he was writing the character right. Cat, and he was like, I feel like I could play this character. And yeah. It was like, I love that.

Mario: And then, yeah. Yeah, there's a very young, and I think because he wrote this last episode in this episode, this last episode was so well received.

I think he'll get the votes for the end,

Julia: for this one. Yeah. Oh, man, this last episode was so freaking good or

Mario: yeah. Yes. They just get better and better. Yeah. And it's funny. I know we're going on a tangent real quick to have a second season. Just be as good. If not better than the first season is always amazing.

Cause you always hear about the sophomore slump. Well, they were riding high and they just tend to go low. Cause they were like too full of

Julia: themselves. But especially when you think about the premise of the first season and the way that they were able to sort of create that intrigue for season two and then yes, that's huge, outstanding writing for comedy.

We have girls five ever. Their pilot episode was nominated hacks. There's no line also their pilot. Pen 15. The episode is called play, Ted lasso, make Rebecca great again. And they're pilots. So they have two writing credits, nominated, and then the flight attendant in case of emergency. So I'm thinking I haven't watched girls I've ever yet, but I've heard amazing things.

Mario: I have any, that was one I didn't watch that's on, I believe peacock

Julia: it's on peacock and peacock. I can't figure out like some stuff I can watch, but then some stuff they're like, you have to pay for this. And I'm just like,

Mario: We get it free because we have Xfinity for internet and stuff. So we that's how I get to watch these shows. But

Julia: I wonder if I also can get it if I also get it free because I have the expended. I tried to watch the saved by the bell reboot. And it was like, yeah. And they're like, I watched the first three episodes and they were like, sign into your account.

And I was like, what? How did my mother watch this every single episode? But I can't figure this out.

Mario: I would love to find it. It's, it's a tough

Julia: choice because

Mario: I actually thought it's in it to win it because that was such a good first episode. And then, um, but I think Ted last was going to get it cause it's got like as a two.

So it's going to ask. Yeah,

Julia: I think the same thing, I think Ted last, those going to, I think, and I actually think make Rebecca great again, is going to be the one that's going to win. All right, Mario, we've got to stop agreeing on shit.

Mario: No competition.

Julia: There's no competition here. Okay. Outstanding drama series.

So we have Britain Lovecraft country pose, which is in it. That's its final season. I'm pretty sure it's done the boys, the crown, the Handmaid's tale, the Mandalorian. And this is us.

Mario: Oh, man, this is another good. This is another good category. I, I would love Lovecraft country to win just because it did kick canceled.

Julia: I know

Mario: that's such a bummer. Maybe if it won, like they would be like, oh, we're going, gonna renew it. You know? Um, pose pose would be very historic for that show to win standing, especially since it's in slightly, it was in last season. So I've, I feel like pose is going to take it, um, just because there's so much love around that show anyway.

Um, and then for again, they're going to probably just reward it for the whole. As a whole, so yeah, I see posts taking it, but I would love Lovecraft country to win it. Um, the Mandalorian it's still, it's still going. So it has its chance, the crowns one, I think the last couple of years,

Julia: the crowds, whenever the crown has people nominated, they win or anything nominated, they win.

And it's just like, yes, we get it. It's really good. And yes, I'm an Anglo file. Totally. But also look at all the other amazing

Mario: stuff. That's not right. Bridget. Finn was really good too. Um, I think it's just, uh, Again, it's coming back. So I think you'll get a chance. The boys is amazing. Um, but we know, we know how it works.

Shows we'll go with superhero shows. So it's like, well, superheroes in general. So I felt like, yeah, I felt like it won't win. This is us. We'll win next year, probably because it's in its final season. But yeah. But yeah, I think it's going to go to pose. I would love it. Love calf country to go get it.

Julia: I would love it.

If it went to pose or a Lovecraft. I'm not finished with real Lovecraft country yet. I'm still in the process of watching it because there are some really intense scenes that I'm just like, this stresses me out. I would love it. If either of those one, it would make me so happy, but I actually think the crown is going to win.

Outstanding lead actor in a drama series. We have reggae on page who was Simon basket, the duke of Hastings. He broke the internet then majors for Lovecraft country. Um, and I loved his spot in, uh, Loki, by the way, I thought that was a really great. Yeah. And then Matthew Rhys for Perry Mason, Billy Porter for POWs, Josh O'Connor for the crown and Sterling Kane brown, obviously for this as us, because he is so fucking good as Randall.

Yeah,

Mario: he's perfect. I love Rache John Page to win just because he's young and it's like he's up and coming, but I think it's going to be. Um, I think Billy port is going to take it. I would love Jonathan majors to want to too. Cause he's such a great actor. And then

Julia: yes. Oh my gosh, that first episode of Lovecraft country, I was like, ah, you're so good.

I'm like, where have you been

Mario: all my life? And like you said, he was really good and low-key um, but yeah, I think Billy Porter is going to take it. Um, I think it would be historic for them to do that. Show them some love. Oh yeah. My mum between Billy or reishi John Page, I think he's going to win, but Billy we'll take

Julia: it.

Okay. I think this is the first time this category has ever been this stacked with like black men. Diversity. Yeah. That's great. Because reggae is on page. She's biracial. Jonathan majors, Billy Porter, Sterling K brown, like that's the bulk of the category. So that's pretty exciting. Um, when you think about the history of all the word shows and then Matthew, Reese is pretty good at Perry Mason, my dad, we grew up watching the original Perry Mason.

When we were on vacation and my parents discovered that Perry, there's a reboot for HBO max, and they, they actually sat through it and watched it. And I was surprised because, you know, my folks aren't really big on like the whole, uh, lots of swearing. And they're just there, you know, it's like, what do we really need to use the bomb all the time?

And I'm like, yeah, kind of, yeah, they're not into it, but they watched it and they enjoyed it. So I was surprised by that. And Matthew Reese did a really good job. 'cause then the, in Perry, Mason, they give you the backstory of how he becomes an attorney. Did you watch it?

Mario: I didn't watch it. It's my.

Julia: I mean, it can wait.

It's not like as compelling as Lovecraft country or, you know, some of these other shows that exist out there, but it's good. I really want Billy Porter to be the end. All be all because pose has come to an end and he's so good on it. And I just love him in general. I follow him on Instagram. I love his energy.

I love him in everything else. I've seen him. Yeah. 'cause he's in another movie. I really enjoyed called like a boss. And, um, but I just, I don't, this one's hard for me. I feel like Sterling K brown, whenever he's nominated, he wins. I'm just gonna, I'm gonna choose Sterling K brown,

but I'm gonna say, I want, I want Billy Porter to win, but I think it's going to go to Sterling K brown. You know what? It might not though, because the lot is anyway. I don't know. Cause when you consider the politics of it too. Yeah, there's a strong, he's got a strong chance. I'm going to go with my gut. I could be wrong, but I'm going with my gut.

You never know. You never know. All right, our outstanding lead actresses in a drama series, we have ouzo, uh, duke, uh, Duba in for, in treatment, which is an apple plus show journey, small let Lovecraft country MJ Rodriguez for POWs, Emma McWarren for the crown Olivia Coleman for the crown and Elizabeth boss for Handmaid's tale.

Elizabeth Moss has one for Handmaid's tale. Bullshit.

Mario: Yeah, and she's good. I just, I wasn't impressed with this last season. Um, but I, I want June, journey's smaller to win. She's such an amazing actress. And I thought she was amazing and Lovecraft country, the crowns one so many times it's like, come on and give it to somebody else.

I, I want to say it's going to be MJ Rodriguez though. Cause oppose. Um, like I said, politically, I think it's going to go to, uh, But I would love to

Julia: win her nomination. MJ Rodriguez nomination was monumental. Like it is a first, it exploded the internet before. Just thrilled. I mean, it got news coverage for a solid week, which is kind of, I mean, that's kind of a big deal because, you know, news coverage kind of tapers after 48 hours, people stop talking about stuff.

Um, and she is so. Good and pose. It would be a shame to give it to her because the season's finally over because I haven't watched the final season of pose, but in her earlier season, she's so good. And she was never nominated before. And so that bums me out that they're like it happened now that she can't play this character anymore.

Um, but journey's small lead also did a really great job in Lovecraft country. So I'm torn between those two and who's going to win. That's a hard prediction for me to make. Yeah.

Mario: How far are you in Lovecraft country side?

Julia: Sorry. No, that's okay. At this point, I'm only in episode one, because one was so tense that I was just like, I need where's all my fluffing stuff.

Okay. We're going to watch all that. We're going to watch a couple of episodes of the office. We're going to just like,

Mario: I'm done my adrenaline. I think it's episode four. That's probably, I think it's my F I want to say it's cause there was like a haunted house episode,

Julia: basically. Okay. I'm gonna have a heart attack during the, but

Mario: that was my, I believe my favorite episode of the thing, because journey small, it just like dominated that episode.

So that's why I was wondering, because I wanted you to see it because I believe that's why she got nominated and I would love for her to win. Um, I want to say it's episode four. I would have to go and verify, but episode three or four, it's one of the earlier episodes. She was so amazing in that episode.

Julia: It was a book. I didn't know that until earlier this week.

Mario: Yeah. But yeah, mg Rodriguez I think, is going win in. I think it's historic and yes.

Julia: Um, like I said, I could either journeys smaller or MJ Rodriguez. I can't make a decision. It's going to be one of those. So I'm going to just, I'm just going to note that I predicting either of those, which is like a safe bet, right? Because then. Well, we're not going to talk about the odds of that. I should have left Kraft country finished by the time the Emmy's air outstanding actor in a drama supporting actor in a drama series.

This one's pretty, pretty heavy contenders too. We've got Michael K. Williams for Lovecraft country. John Carlo Esposito for the Mandalorian John Lithgow for Perry, Mason, to biased Menzies for the. Bradley Whitford for the Handmaid's tale. OT. I'm not sure how to say this actor's last name, but it's OT. And then it's like F a G B E N L E.

I don't

Mario: know how to, I don't know how to pronounce. I'm going to have to, he wasn't, he was the guy from, um, black widow. He was the purse. He was her, um, supplier

He plays with Moss's, uh, husband in the hand.

Julia: Okay.

Mario: So he was actually really good. He was actually, he has a lot more screen time that season and he was actually really good.

Julia: Oh, that's good. Chris Sullivan for this disaster. And. I don't know how to say his last name either. I want to say Mandela.

Mario: I think it , I

Julia: don't know.

I need to ask the YouTubes, find some interviews where they're being announced on stage for the Handmaid's tale. So there's a lot of men nominated from the Handmaid's tale in this category.

Mario: This season. It was very, I don't know if you watched this last season, but it was very, um, men centric.

Julia: I'm going to give you a confession right now.

I can't sit through that shit. Like I read the Handmaid's tale in high school and I'm still traumatized from that book. Everyone's like, you love it. It's so good. I'm like, I just feel like we're really close to like that kind of shit happening in real life. So I don't know if I want to sit through it.

Mario: Oh no.

And it's, and it's Dell and it's dive so far from the book now. It's like, I feel like they're just kind of making it up, but I mean, I guess there's a second. Uh, I think it's called testaments. I D I haven't no one, but, but I guess it's kind of going off of that too, but, um, but yeah, this, this, uh, this season was very men centric, so, um, I could see why all these guys were nominated, which they were great, but again, it's just all handmade, still.

So I'd love for like an underdog to win. Oh, this one's hard.

Julia: I would love category.

Mario: I think it's, I don't know. I think it's going to be. John Carlo has Placido cause he's been in everything. He, um, he was in breaking bad and all that stuff. So I think, um, I forget what they call them. They call them legacies.

Like people who've done so many good shows and stuff. So I think he's probably going to be, I think he could take it. Okay. More Chris solving cause crystal. This season, and this is us as well.

Julia: He did. And we got a little prediction in the future that, you know, Chris Sullivan could potentially be going away because we got a wedding flash forward, Christy mats.

And the guy from you're the worst.

Mario: Yes. Cricket. And so I love him. So I think it's going to be one of those two. I'm going to go, I'll go with John Carlo Esposito though, taking that chem.

Julia: I'm actually thinking it's going to be John Lithgow because he, again, Not necessarily because of his performance, but because he is like, I have to go up against this person, cause they're always going to win.

Like, I feel like that's John Lithgow, regardless of whether or not his performance was amazing or not like he's so heavy and Hollywood and has such an like stacked resume and has done so much in drama and in comedy that I just feel like he's one of those guys where just like, if you're a nominated in a category with him, like good luck.

Mario: I could see that. Yeah. Okay. I get that.

Julia: I could be wrong. I could be wrong.

Mario: I would love for that September

Julia: 19 from I know I love Tobias Menzies. I hit, I would love for him to win because I thought he did such a great job as. Phillip, but it could see, I don't know how people vote for this shit because I can't stop thinking about all of their other performances too.

Yeah. You know, like twice Menzies, is it also in the show called Outlander and he's so good. Cause he plays two very different characters in that show, which would probably never get nominated for an Emmy or a golden globe then to see him in the crown and then to see them in this season of modern love on prime.

You're just like, bro. It

Mario: can come

Julia: from, is there anything you can't do because you played a totally psychotic type of army person. And then in the same show, you're playing a very sweet, loving husband and father in the same show. And then you're playing the prince Philip and then you play like, I just, he's just damn DWIs Benzie.

Wow. Wow. Okay. So I clocked you for the Mandalorian candidate and I am picking the paramitas in candidate are supporting actresses in a drama series. I have no idea how to say her name from left Kraft country, but her last name is Ellis and I feel terrible because I'm very nervous.

Mario: okay.

Julia: And then the Handmaid's tale, Yvonne strap. I don't know how to say her last name.

We're going to go with what you said, Gillian Anderson for the crown Samira Wiley for Handmaid's tale, Helena Bonham Carter for the crown Emerald funnel for the crown Madeline brewer for the Handmaid's tale and handouts in the Handmaid's tale. So him and still wow. That's a

lot

Mario: of it. There was a lot of, yeah, it was a lot of acting this season.

There's

Julia: a lot of acting this season. He said, yes,

Mario: this category was interesting to me cause they're like, everyone's good in this kind of like, I love Helena Bonham, Carter. And again, I love her and everything she does. So it's like, I go, I think about all the other characters she does, you know, it's like, I kind of want to root for Anjanay Ellis just because she is the underdog out of all of them.

But I want us to Julian Anderson. I know there's so much buzz around her

Julia: and the transformation she went through to become Maggie Thatcher was like, I didn't recognize her. I saw her name in the credits and then here she come. And I'm like, where the fuck is Gillian Anderson? And then I'm like, holy shit.

After I'm reading the end credits, it's like, damn girl.

Mario: Yeah. Um, I love aunt Lydia who's endowed in the hemorrhage. So, but I think, I think Gillian Anderson is going to take this one, I think just cause she, she has a staple in Hollywood too. She's done the X-Files people know her, you know, so I think she's going to do it.

And like you said, she, her transformation I think was really well-known in that show. So.

Julia: I'm inclined to agree. I was very surprised by her transformation. It would actually be nice for Ms. Ellis to win because Lovecraft country is literally the only other show nominated besides the crown and made bell, but it's just Jillian Anderson's.

Um, transformation was just like, that's just so mind blowing to me, especially when. Her performance is an X-Files and then she's also on that show sex ed that's on Netflix. Like it's just to go under that sort of massive make-over overhaul to be Margaret Thatcher. It's just day on, like, I just was like, damn girl.

All right. Writing for a drama series. Lovecraft country episode is sundown, which is this serious. Pose they're serious finale. The boys, what I knew, which is I think their season two finale, the crown episode, it was war. The Mandalorian has two nominations, chapter 13, that Jedi and chapter 16, the rescue in the Handmaid's tale home,

Mario: man.

I know those are all such

Julia: good episodes. Yeah. Sundown stressed me out so hard.

Mario: I was such a good episode. And then the Mandalorian, the rescue and the Jedi, both great episodes. I don't know. You go first, go, go first. I got a process.

Julia:

Mario: it's going to go to pose. I feel like it's going to get a pose. You think it's going to go?

Julia: Yeah. Serious finale trying to think of who won last year. And I can't remember. I meant to look it up before today, but life's hard. The. Lovecraft country sundown was so good. It's an hour long episode. Give or take it literally took me three hours to watch it because I'd get so stressed out, hit pause and walk away, come back down and come back.

But the way. That scene where they're in the diner and they're in that they're on their way to either they've left on their trip or whatever. And they're in that diner and the walls are painted white and the floors like tiled or whatever. And, and, you know, the characters like, Hey uncle, like, can you tell me why you want to talk about why the white house was painted white?

And as he's telling this at the same time during the small let's characters overhearing, you know, the, um, the kid in the car. The kid in the restaurant, like calling somebody and be like, I dunno, they just sat down and blah, blah, blah. No, I'm not going to serve them. And she's like seeing that because she's coming back from the bathroom and then it cuts back to him telling his nephew about why the white house is painted and it was burned down.

And then he slides a tile on the Florence burned and she's all y'all got to get the fuck on outta here. They climb into the car and go, and they're just, it was so like that coordination like that. Back and forth that we see was just like, I'm going to have a heart attack. Are they going to get out of town?

I mean, obviously the first episode is going to go with, they are getting out of town and they're going to be safe, but I can't hang because it felt so, like, it felt like they were chasing me, but poses also so good, the costumes or their costumes are always incredible. That just the passion that goes behind that show is so amazing.

It is a hard choice because I'm like the safe answer is the crown. That's the safe answer because every, like, we, as much as not even though not everybody has an obsession with royalty, there is an underlying sort of obsession in America with the Royal, the British royalty. And so this is a really hard decision.

Okay, I'm going to say, I'm going to say, I think it's the crown is going to win and I'm going to hope for it being

Mario: posed. So we got outstanding limited series. We got Mary B's town. I made a store. You want a vision? The Queens gambit and the underground railroad.

Julia: Oh my God. That's a tough category.

Mario: I. I would love wander vision to get it.

Um, I, I could see them going for one division, cause it's about TV. I mean, I mean, it's, it's about the TV. It's about television and they, they, um, showcase so many types of television on that show. I would love for her to win. I think it would be very big for that show to when mayor of east town was amazing.

So coming back, they haven't, they haven't renewed it, but I think if they win some stuff, they might renew it and they haven't said yes or no. Um, I know Kate Winslet's has expressed interest of returning to that character. So I think they're waiting until the awards shows some, I felt like some shows do that.

Um, the Queen's gambit was amazing and I think it's going to be the Queen's gambit just because they've been winning all the awards. Yeah. Um, but I would love one division to get it, but I think it's going to be queen with gambit.

Julia: So I actually haven't watched the underground railroad yet because I read the book on Amazon.

Right? It's on prime, original. I read the book. The book is amazing. I've read the book twice. I read the book when it was first released because I love Colson Whitehead. I think he's an incredible writer. And so when they Amazon announced they were going to do a limited series. I was like, okay, I'm going to reread this book, but this time I did it on audio.

So I wouldn't have to hide my book when I got scared. Yeah. Um, and doing it on audio book was listening to it on audio book was pretty incredible because it's a different type of performance. So I haven't watched the show yet because I, because I know what happens in the book. And then I've heard interviews with Barry, um, Jenkins.

Thank you. And I'm just like, okay, this sounds amazing. But again, it sounds like something that I'm gonna have to watch only during the daylight hours, because it's going to have a lot of like, really intense shit, but I've seen imagery from it and it looks beautiful. Like the costumes, the way it was shot, all of it looks amazing.

Mayor of east town. I made a stroll. You're both on HBO. Max Queens. Gambit is Netflix. One division is Disney plus and then underground rollers. Yeah. It was a brain. Yes. It will be a huge get for Disney plus if one division one, I mean, that would just kind of solidify that there are contender with their original content.

Mario: Yeah. Yeah. It's a hard, I would love one division win, but I think, I really think Queens gambit

Julia: it's going to win one division was so good. And it's different in its storytelling style too, because of the parallels that they did between television and Wanda's life. Oh my gosh. That was so brilliant.

Mario: You got to choose Julia. I know,

Julia: I know this is a really hard decision. I haven't watched, I made a story. Oh yeah. I've heard amazing things, but again, it's one of those things where really intense content stresses me out and I have to be mindful of. Like I can't watch it. And I say, I keep saying, I watch it during the daylight hours.

I literally can't watch like intense stuff after dark because it affects my sleep. I got you. I enjoy sleeping. I don't want to get messed up shit. And mayor of east town got so much attention. Like the Twitter verse blew up,

Mario: man.

Julia: Like you, I want one division to win just because it was so. Visually different and the way they told the story was so unique.

Yeah. But I don't think it's going to win.

I'm going to say underground railroad because Barry Jenkins has a lot of clout.

Mario: Okay. All right. All right. So then we have outstanding lead act, uh, Paul Bettany and wander division Hugh grant for the end, doing you and McGregor for Halston. Oh, yeah. Lin-Manuel Miranda for Hamilton and Le Leslie Odom Jr.

For Hamilton.

Julia: Like my reaction to you and McGregor. I tried to watch Halston and I was like, this is garbage.

Mario: I couldn't get into it either. So you're good. Um, I think it's going to be Hugh grant for the undoing. I think he was actually really well on that show. Um, and Hugh grant had taken a break from Hollywood, so to have him come on, Um, I think he did, the gentlemen was his first movie in a while, and then he came back into the show.

So, um, I think Hugh grant is going to take this one.

Julia: I haven't watched the undoing yet.

Mario: Oh, so good.

Julia: I've heard really good things. Um, you know what, having seen Halston. W, I mean, I don't know how you pulled that off you on McGregor. Cause that shows garbage. Maybe people will disagree with me. That's fine.

But I literally couldn't finish the first episode. I think I'm gonna, I'm gonna agree with you and go with Hugh grant. Okay. I would love for Paul, but Nina win or a Leslie Odom Jr. I love him. He's so talented, but I don't know if Hamilton, I don't know if Hamilton was. That will be, that would be huge for Hamilton.

And it was pretty controversial when they got nominated for some screen stuff, because there it's a Broadway play and they totally like the Tonys loved them. And then when they, when Amazon. When Disney plus put the live performance on there, people were like, wait, you're nominating this, this is a live show kind of thing.

And I'm just like,

Mario: wow. All right. So we've got outstanding lead actress and the limited series or movies. So Kate Winslet from Harvey's town, uh, McKayla coil for, I may destroy you on your,

Julia: sorry, go ahead.

Mario: Oh, I'm going to tailor joy for the Queen's gambit Elizabeth Olson for Wanda vision and, uh, Cynthia Erivo for genius.

Which was a movie I believe was on and

Julia: mini series. Yeah. It was a

Mario: mini series or was it a show?

Julia: It's a show, but each episode is a different person. So Cynthia Scott, her episode was genius, but the episodes prior to that were like Albert Einstein and somebody else.

Mario: Yeah. So I think I would love like, again, I would love Elizabeth Olson, Dwayne.

Was amazing. I'm a big Elizabeth Olson fan anyway. Um, she's way better than her sister. Just, just to like, just to see her like grow in her character too. I mean, she, she was, you know, from Avengers, age of Ultron and then she, you know, developed into who she was and in game, but then just to have her own show and just take the lead in that, like, I mean to go through that, those stages of grief and like being happy one moment, but being sad, but being furious, but being so it's just like, but I feel like she's so young that she's going to get other chances to get nominated.

So I think it's going to go to Kate Winslet just because. Kate Winslet is amazing. And award shows love Kate Winslet

Julia: and that accent, she nailed it. She knew that wasn't that regional accent. That was

Mario: so much, that was a rough part to play, like from what she's done before. So I think, I think people are gonna like that.

And yeah, I, I agree. I, I would not be upset that Caitlin's the one, cause she was amazing that show. Yeah. But I think, I think the word will go to Caitlin. So I'm mad at.

Julia: I'm inclined to agree with you. I, I love Cynthia or YVO. I think she's a talented actress, but she, for some reason, Just it's, something's not there for her to be able to.

When I did try to watch that episode of the Risa Franklin episode, couldn't get into it for my friends in real life. Listening know that that's a big thing because I love Aretha Franklin, anything Aretha Franklin, I will sit through. I could not get through that episode and I don't know why. Didn't set well with me.

So I'm going to, I'm going to agree. I'm going to go with Kate Winslet as well, because the number one thing that gets brought up when I talked to people about that show is damn, she's spot on, on that accent. You know, I have family in that region and that's exactly how they sound, you know, kind of stuff.

So I think because she's a British accent, pretty shocking because she's a British actress and nailing such a unique English, American dialect, like. That's some serious talent right there. Whereas Emma Taylor joy, whenever she does an American accent, I'm just like stop talking. Like we can tell it's fake

because on Peaky blinders, she plays an American and I can't, I just can't with her, like stop talking in America. Please go back to your natural dialogues.

Mario: I got you. All right. So outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or movie, we got Dovie Diggs from Hamilton, Jonathan Groff for handling.

Anthony Ramos for Hamilton, Thomas Brody. Sangster for the Queens gambit, Evan Peters from air east town and Papa as CDOT for, I may destroy you. I'm probably saying his name wrong. I'm sorry. A lot of them are a lot of Hamilton and this one.

Julia: Yeah.

Mario: Um, I think it's going to go to heaven. Peter's very obese town.

He was so good in that show as well. I mean, I know him from, you know, X-Men and then the American horror story series. So he's so good in those. Um, but I think again, like it was different, it was a different type of character for him to play and he did it so well. And I think you just, you fall in love with his character in that show.

So, um, but yeah, so I think he's going to take in, I, I. Super happy if you want, but I think

Julia: he'll take it. Yeah. Yeah. He was so good in the mayor of east town. I don't want to give anything away about his character on that show, but it's really hard not to comment about it. Yeah.

Mario: I know. I had to watch what I said too.

Cause I was like, oh

Julia: yeah, that's a really. Listen, if Daveed Diggs wins, that would be,

Mario: I wouldn't be happy, but I would be happy playing. So he's going to be played in Sebastian and the little mermaid, the live action version. I believe.

Julia: I, and see again here, I'm like, I want him to win, but not necessarily based on his role in Hamilton, but just into his entire catalog.

Cause he's on, he plays Johan. Growing up, Johan on Blackish, a rainbows brother. And I love that. And then he did this movie called blind spotting, um, which is amazing. Came out in 2018 and then stars did a show like spinoff show of it with some of the same characters. He's not on it, but he produced it or whatever.

Um, And then Thomas Brody. Um, Sangster like, he's a little kid from love actually, and he's done some he's so good and he's in such amazing stuff. And he was in a show called, um, shit. It was a country show on Netflix a couple of years ago. And his, you know, New Mexico accent for 1880s was so good that I forgot.

He's a British actor.

Mario: He's also in the maze runner series two.

Julia: Yeah, he is. He was really good in that too. Shit. This one's hard. It is. Listen. I'm going the easy route and picking, um, Evan Peters.

Mario: All right. Last category, outstanding supporting actress in a limited series or movie, we got Jean smart for mayor of east town.

Julianne Nicholson from air. Kathryn Hahn Wanda vision, uh, Phillipa Soo for Hamilton, Renee Ellis, Goldsboro Barry for Hamilton and Moses Ingram for the Queens gambits. Hands-down I think it's going to go to Catherine hand one division.

Julia: Oh, she was so good in one division. It's stupid.

Mario: How good she's always done TV.

I mean, she was in parks and rec. She was in, um, the HBO show. Mrs. Fletcher. She has a nice resume to. It's a good example of a working actress. Um, you know, always, always working. She's always doing something and, um,

Julia: she's having

Mario: a moment. Right. And I think she was so good and one of the vision, and she has the song, I got to say all along.

And the top billboards for a couple of weeks and there's tick talks of it and everything. So I think, I think lb her year,

Julia: I'm inclined to agree as well because she's just so talented.

Mario: And I feel like if Wanda vision, if the only thing that's going to be the award that Wanda vision will win. I mean, unfortunately, just because again, we know, I think politically superheroes just don't have a good history with award shows.

But I think, I think everyone can agree Katherine hundred really well on that show. And I think that's how they're going to reward that show is cat. So I think that'll be cool too, because then Kevin fire, you like, oh yeah, she want award. So let's put her in more movies and all of a sudden you're like more Agatha.

Yes.

Julia: She really was good in one efficient and you know, Jean smart was great in mayor of east town, but in comparison to her performance and hacks, I think hacks is a better

Mario: performance. Yeah. And Julianne Nicholson was getting married these town too, but she wasn't my favorite character. Yeah. And then Hamilton, you know, They're all good, but they're

Julia: all good.

I saw Hamilton in September of 19 in San Francisco and it was really good. Of course it was a touring cast, but still the train passes just as talented. Yes, it was very, very good, but I don't know if I would. Those actors for those roles to win in comparison to some of the other performances we've seen that were specifically developed for television Hamilton, wasn't developed for television.

I literally just did a live recording of the show and then put it on Disney

Mario: plus. So when they make an actual movie, then we can talk about

Julia: nominations. Exactly. Right. Just because, yeah, because it's a totally different style filming a live stage performance compared to filming a television show or a film.

Totally different, totally different ballgame.

Mario: So that was the way the categories, at least the main ones that we're going to start on September 19th. It's such a, it's a, such a good, I mean, we've said it multiple. There's so many good shows nominated this year. And like I said, I wish I could give a, to everyone and be like, you get award, you get award.

Right. But yeah, it's going to, it'll be a good, I I'm, I'm looking forward to this. Yeah,

Julia: I am too. I'm very excited. I can't wait to see which one of us is right. And which one of us is wrong or for both wrong or for both right. Listeners. We are going to do a recap once the MES errors, Mario and I are going to come back and do a recap of the show.

You know, obviously we'll talk about the winners, whether or not we feel robbed, or if we agree and, um, we'll talk about this. Generally whether or not they did a good job cause award shows in the time of COVID right. It's what this period of life should be called, but I'm excited. I'm excited for the word shows.

I love television so

Mario: much. It's very competitive, you know, and it's funny cause it's like when you have shows releasing as the same time as movies and you see the shows doing better. That's a good competition. Like when he's got to step up their game, you know, if they're going to compete.

Julia: Absolutely.

Absolutely. I wonder if low-key will be nominated next year. I

Mario: want to say it. Well, I think out of all the three shows, I think not low-key has the best chance of winning, um, more awards than the previous two, but. I would be happy with that. Yeah. Cause they better get a nomination for lead actor. Yeah.

Julia: He was so good on that show and I'm very excited that there's a season two coming.

Yes. As I mentioned before, the Emmy's. On September 19th at 5:00 PM Pacific time. And you can watch on CBS or paramount plus Mario, tell everybody where they can find you online. If they want to keep up with

Mario: you. I have an Instagram at movies with Mr. Mario. Right now I would just review movies and TV shows that I'm currently watching.

Um, and just try and keep up with everything. Cause like you said, there's so much good content. So it's hard. There's only so many hours in the day. I know

Julia: doesn't somebody just want to pay us so we can like review movies and TV and watch movies and TV all day. Doesn't that sound like the best. So fun.

Mario: Yeah,

it

Julia: was good at it.

Mario: So good at it. Anyway, you guys for having me here, I cannot wait to talk to you on the 19th. And I know I'm so

Julia: excited. I'm thinking, yeah. I'm thinking I might actually like live posts during the show, which is not normally a thing I do. I usually like posit at the top of the show and then delay at 20 minutes and then I can skip through commercials, but yeah.

Um, but I don't know, but I'm excited to, to have that conversation with you and friends who are listening. Take that conversation. We're going to record it and we're going to push it into your earbuds. The next day, Mario will be on later in season two, we'll be discussing Lala lambs. So keep your ears open for that show.

It was a, it was a great conversation. I'm excited to release that until then. If you want to keep up with us between episodes, you can find us on Instagram at pub culture makes me jealous. Thanks for tuning in y'all.
